Kind of, I don't focus much on welfare but I do think there should be a basic platform for it. People shouldn't be too poor nor too rich, however I don't focus on wealth either. In the western world at least, we have enough wealth as it already is. What I focus on is State ownership over production and industry as a means to an end. I guess with your friend the difference is between Democratic Socialism vs Authoritarian Socialism. Democratic Socialism is really soft Communism, using Socialism as a means for redistributing the wealth, social and economic equality, democratic/shared means of production, etc. I disagree with it, I don't believe the majority of people are capable nor responsible enough in a democratic system and I'm not socially left even though I'm economically left. With the idea of Authoritarian Socialism is that the State should have control over the means of production and rejecting democratic principles. Sure we both hate the rich and want what's best for people, just different ways of going through it. If that makes sense.
